Chicago - He's not saying names, but Mayor Rahm Emanuel is pointing the finger at someone else for Chicago’s surge in crime, and defends the strategies he and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy have put in place.
The mayor made a reference to the Richard M. Daley administration, saying it should have addressed a policing problem long before he arrived at a news conference.
“I’m not happy,” Emanuel said.
Emanuel blames his predecessor and former Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis for letting the violence escalate to this level. He said that having too many officers on clerical duty contributed to the problem, and eventually to the 60 percent increase in homicides in the first three months of 2012.
The mayor said that in the 10 months he’s been in office, they have instituted their Gang Audit strategy, enforced a curfew for young people and shifted 600 cops into new positions.
The mayor does attribute the increase in gun violence to changing gang activity in Chicago.
Emanuel plans to crack down on liquor stores - which have proved to be epicenters for gang activity in certain neighborhoods. He said his administration is also working on better programs for adolescents and youth to get involved in, to give their something productive to do when they aren’t in school.
He also said that the weather has nothing to do with the escalation in violence, but residents aren’t buying it. They’re worried about what’s to come for the city, as we head into summer.
