Ken Raskin, proprietor and son of the late Manny, works the rooms, greeting customers who have known him since he was a small boy. Ken feels that part of the secret to his success is being visible to his customers, making sure they are happy and satisfied. Ken’s sons Danny and Matt, fourth generation, have now joined full time and help in personally overseeing the daily work of the restaurant. Ken's wife Patti or one of his other 2 children, Jason and Stephanie, are often around making sure the customers have eaten to their hearts' content.

The family tradition is nothing new at Manny's. It can be traced back (along with some of the recipes) to more than 50 years ago. When Jack Raskin joined his brother Charlie in the first of the Raskin cafeterias located on Van Buren and Halsted streets. The Russian-born brothers specialized in Jewish cooking served up quickly and in large portions - the way Charlie had learned by watching his mother.

Jack, Manny & Charlie Raskin

Manny's Coffee Shop & Deli came into being shortly after World War II, when the Raskin brothers split up so that Jack could open his own restaurant on Roosevelt Road near the open-air market area known as Maxwell Street. The restaurant property Jack bought had been originally named Sunny's. So rather than tear down the old sign and get a whole new one, Jack named it after his teenage son, Emanuel (or Manny, to family and friends), saving money by simply buying two letters and replacing the "Su" in Sunny's with "Ma."

It was a shoestring operation at first, with Manny serving as the cook (he had learned by watching his uncle). The address changed a few times, and then in 1964 Manny's moved to its current spot on Jefferson Street. Ken remembers his father saying, "I know what the people around here want, and I'm the only one left who can do it."

Even when Manny's opened at this location more than 35 years ago it was among the last of the unique style of urban eatery - the home style, family run cafeteria bubbling with the spirit of its neighborhood and attracting patrons from all walks of life. In those early years, if you lived or worked anywhere in the vicinity you could hitch a ride on the Manny's van that circled around making deliveries and picking up customers for lunch.

Still, to get the full effect of the rich history surrounding Manny's you have to view the dining room walls decorated with news clippings, reviews, snapshots, and memorabilia demonstrating how deeply Chicagoans treasure this historic restaurant - as a place to eat and meet, and as a memento of downtown as it was a half century ago, a relic of the past.

Manny's opened it's second location on April 18,2002. It is located on A concourse in the New Midway Airport.

I enjoyed the food here it is set like a high school  cafeteria. The staff are warm and friendly. The food is gravey. The donuts are fresh and homemade  to the taste. The cornbeef on rye is out standing. The cheese cake might be from Eli's. I give Mannys 10 Sears Towers.

Uber being sued

It’s no secret that Uber’s disruptive on-demand car and taxi service is ruffling the feathers of the taxi industry. It seems that in every city in which Uber launches, there’s legal pushback from the industry that the startup is disrupting. We’ve seen this in D.C., San Francisco, New York and Boston. Today, Chicago joins the mix, with a new lawsuit filed by a group of taxi and livery companies in Chicago.

For background, in April, Uber expanded beyond just offering black cars in Chicago to including Taxis on its app. Via the app, riders can see which taxi cabs are close to them on the map of the Chicago area. Similar to the way you order a black car via Uber, you simply choose the taxi and waiting time that works for you, set your exact location and then you’ll receive a message when the taxi driver has arrived at the location. At the time, Uber was recruiting taxis directly on a driver-by-driver basis.

According to a release issued by the parties, Uber is being accused violating multiple Chicago and Illinois laws designed at protecting public safety, consumer protection and fair practices. The complaint also alleges that Uber is using deceptive business methods to confuse its customers.

The complaint charges that Uber is not inspecting taxi vehicles to make sure they comply with city and state regulations and does not ask potential taxi drivers if they are properly insured. The lawsuit also alleges that Uber claims it works with “fleet partners” when Uber actually works directly with drivers in its taxi service. The taxi and livery companies says that Uber is deliberately trying to confuse customers and “cash in on the taxi companies’ good name, trademarks and reputation.”

To be honest, Uber has always been open that they work with drivers, not the companies, so I’m not sure where the misrepresentation is taking place. Even within Uber’s app, the car service startup doesn’t specify which Taxi company each available taxi is hailing from.

Other claims in the lawsuit include that Uber charges a “20% gratuity” for all taxi rides, but only half of the “gratuity” goes to the driver, which the taxi companies say violate city ordinances by charging more than the statutory set rates displayed on the taxi meter. We’re told by Uber; however, that riders do pay 20% gratuity but this passes through to the driver. In turn, drivers pay Uber a service fee per ride for bringing the driver the additional business, which seems fair.

Additionally, the lawsuit contends that in Chicago, Uber mischaracterized its methods of operation in order to acquire a dispatch license and failed to disclose on its dispatch license application that it has no agreement with any taxi affiliations as required by Chicago ordinance.

Also, Chicago taxi drivers are prohibited by city and state law from using cellular telephones or other electronic devices, whether or not hands-free, while operating a cab and Uber requires drivers to use an iPhone and then call the customer using a cell phone to arrange the pickup.

It’s hard to tell how much weight these claims hold without knowing the intricacies of Chicago’s city and state laws regarding taxis. But as we’ve seen with the response from taxi companies and commissions in other cities, Uber is facing a battle because the company is disrupting an age-old sector. Taxi companies are seeing how competitive Uber is becoming in each city, and bringing out the knives to fight.

Uber drivers have filed a class action lawsuit claiming they have been misclassified as independent contractors and are entitled to be reimbursed for their expenses that Uber should have to pay, like for gas and vehicle maintenance. The lawsuit also challenges Uber’s practice of telling passengers that the gratuity is included and not to tip the drivers, even though you are not getting a tip!!

On December 5, 2013, the federal court issued a significant ruling denying Uber’s motion to dismiss this case. The ruling is a big victory for Uber drivers! It endorsed the plaintiffs’ legal theories and says that the drivers can pursue their claims for tips, as well as for misclassification and expense reimbursement, under California law.

In a later decision, issued September 4, 2014, the court narrowed the legal theories that the plaintiffs can pursue, but the statutory misclassification and tips claims are going forward.

In the first decision, the court agreed with our argument that California law would apply to drivers outside California so that this case may cover drivers nationwide. However, in the more recent decision, the judge changed his mind and ruled that the case could only cover drivers in California. We are seeking to appeal that decision.

The case is now in discovery, and the court will be hearing summary judgment argument later this year.

Last year, Uber began including an “arbitration clause” in its contracts with drivers in order to prevent them from being part of a class action case. The court has not yet ruled on whether this clause is enforceable. The court agreed with the plaintiffs’ argument that the arbitration clause could undermine drivers’ ability to participate in this class action and ordered that Uber provide “corrective notice” about the arbitration clause. Under the court’s order, new drivers were given another opportunity to “opt out” of the arbitration clause. Also, when new drivers start driving for Uber, they have 30 days from the date they agree to the licensing agreement to “opt out” of the arbitration clause.

Because the 30 days have now passed since Uber sent out the revised agreement with the arbitration clause, we are no longer submitting opt out forms to Uber, except for drivers who have recently started driving for Uber and are still within the 30 days of having agreed to Uber’s licensing agreement.  But if you are interested in this case and want to stay informed about what is happening, please fill out and send us this form, or e-mail your name and contact information to pacevedo@llrlaw.com.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the lawyer representing Uber drivers, Shannon Liss-Riordan, or her paralegal assistants Elizabeth Lopez and Phil Acevedo or associate attorneys Ben Weber and Adelaide Pagano. They can be reached at (617) 994-5800, or by e-mail atelopez@llrlaw.com and pacevedo@llrlaw.com. Portland sued Uber on Monday to stop the fast-growing ride-hailing service from operating in the Oregon city until it follows local regulations.

Uber operates in areas around Portland, but only started up in the city itself on Friday, without consent from authorities or any agreement over how it should be regulated.

“The city’s lawsuit is asking for a declaration by the court that Uber is subject to the city’s regulations,” the city said in a statement. “The lawsuit also asks the court to order Uber to stop operating in Portland until it is in compliance with the city’s safety, health and consumer protection rules.”

Local media reported that the service has been available in Portland for the past few days.

“Uber has received a tremendously warm welcome from riders and drivers in and around Portland. We appreciate the way residents have welcomed Uber into the Rose City, their support illustrates why it’s time to modernize Portland transportation regulation,” said Uber spokeswoman Eva Behrend.

The online ride service was valued at $40 billion last week after its latest funding round ahead of an expected initial public offering.

However, it has been dogged by controversy surrounding its aggressive approach to local governments and traditional taxi services.

It has been banned from taking bookings in the Netherlands because authorities say it lacks a special license.

On Monday Uber was banned from operating in the Indian capital New Delhi after a female passenger accused one of its drivers

Good eating in the burbs to the city

Firehouse  Hot dogs is located at 3825 147th Street, Midlothian, IL 60445.
This is a childhood favorite.  Window seating and two picnic tables outside.
Food is fast and fantastic. They also serve rainbow cones. The Sarge said he was going here personally because he wanted a blast from the past.

"As a 10 year old boy me and my friends would ride our bikes here eat then go play in the prairies at the end of our block and by our school. I ordered a Chicago Hotdog with chili and cheese on it omg good. I  enjoy going back every so often and when I reminisce on the old times I can count on my boy hood hang out to be there."

The Sarge rated this himself with 9.75 Sears Towers because he said nothing changed in 27 years not even the food or the customer service and hopes his children will be able to eat here in another 27 years.

Good eating in the burbs to the city

19 Paul  also a Chicago  Police  code that dispatchers receive when there is no criminal activity no offender or victim. The owner is definitely  a Chicago Police Officer. Who owns the small little  business. When you pull in to the drive way you have a drive up window and you are greated with a warm smile. Then you pull around  the back to a small parking area and around to the other drive up window to receive your order. Now we ordered  button # 10803 Paully's  bbq chicken sandwich.

The sandwich  is on a bakery bun with a chicken breast that is perfectly  dipped in bbq sauce  followed by mayo lettuce and a tomato.  A small fry and Pepsi products.  I give this place 8.5 Sears Towers because you can't get this type of food fast and on the go. If you are a messy eater like we are I suggest not eating this in the squad car or in your own car it can get a little messy because it is bbq. But I would definitely go back.

Below is a picture of how sloppy we eat.

But when your sloppy it is because it is good eating

This place is located  right next to the gas station  11155 S. Vincennes Chicago, Illinois 60643

Good eating in the burbs to the city

Chicago Pita Kitchen is located at 13227 South Brainard Avenue

The place has decent parking and a small sit down as well as seating along the window that faces Brainard Ave. We had the heart attack or the Gottardo special.

You start with a bun then 1 lbs hamburger meat then 2 strips of bacon then 5 strips of gyros meat following up with another 1 lbs patty then mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and pickle. Then A1 sauce then the bun. Fries come with and order a big drink. First time we ate here but a good recommendation from the 4th district chicago police I give this place 7 Sears Towers.

Very good.

Time capsule from 1795 is opened

More than 200 years after Samuel Adams and Paul Revere first buried it in Boston, it took an hour to remove all the objects crammed inside a tiny time capsule.

Onlookers anxiously watched the unveiling Tuesday, worrying the items might not have weathered the years very well.

"Could we actually go through the whole box, or would things prove too fragile to take out?" said Malcolm Rogers, director of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. "It was like brain surgery, with history looking down on us."

Piece by piece, Pam Hatchfield, head of objects conservation for the museum, removed each item, whispering "wow" as she first caught a glimpse of some of them.

Among the stash Hatchfield removed from the 1795 time capsule: Five folded newspapers, a Massachusetts commonwealth seal, a title page from Massachusetts colony records and at least 24 coins.

And at the bottom, an inscribed rectangular silver plate, "probably made by Paul Revere and engraved by him," Rogers said.

"That was the treasure at the end," he said.

But getting to it was a painstaking process.

It took seven hours to remove the time capsule from the Massachusetts State House, and more than four hours before Tuesday evening's ceremony for officials to loosen the screws that were holding it shut.

At the broadcast event, which took place at the museum in front of a painting of George Washington, Hatchfield used a porcupine quill and her grandfather's dental tool to help her safely remove the contents of the 10-pound box, which was uncovered during repairs for a water leak at the State House last month.

The box-shaped capsule was placed in the State House cornerstone in 1795 by Revere, the metalsmith, engraver and Revolutionary War hero; Adams, the brewer and governor of Massachusetts; and William Scollay, a local developer, when construction began. Revere was responsible for overlaying the State House dome with copper.

The time capsule measured 5.5 x 7.5 x 1.5 inches, officials said.

It's not the first time the box has been uncovered. In 1855, during some other repairs, the time capsule was removed and its contents cleaned, only to be put back in the cornerstone for almost 160 years. The box's materials were noted in reports of the time.

But this time, historians have had the opportunity to go through the contents with modern tools. After its removal December 11, the box was taken to the Museum of Fine Arts, X-rayed and given a thorough once-over.

Having an idea about what might be inside was nothing compared to actually seeing it, Rogers told CNN.

"Though we knew a little bit about what was in the box, it was a moment of extraordinary excitement as this brass container just the size of a cigar box was slowly opened with surgical precision, and you suddenly found yourself in the presence of history," he said.

Newspapers inside the box were in "amazingly good condition," Hatchfield said.

The large number of copper coins inside might have helped protect the artifacts, she said, since copper helps block the growth of fungus.

The collection of coins recovered from the time capsule included half-cent, one-cent, half-dime, 10-cent and 25-cent coins. Another set of coins included a pine tree shilling from 1652 and a copper medal showing George Washington.

"This is the most exciting project I've ever worked on," a beaming Hatchfield told the crowd after she finished pulling out all of the box's contents, describing how thrilling it was to be part of building a bridge between the past and the present.

"This is what we, as conservators, live for," she said.

Going forward, conservators at the museum will work on preserving items removed from the time capsule.

Then the objects will go on display at the museum. Eventually, the time capsule will be placed again in the cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House, said William F. Galvin, secretary of the commonwealth.

One question still remains, Galvin said: Will officials add anything new to the time capsule before they put it back?

"The governor has wisely suggested that we might," he said, "so we'll think about it."

U. S. Navy commander plead guilty to bribery

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A U.S. Navy commander pleaded guilty Tuesday in a massive bribery scheme involving a longtime military contractor in Asia who allegedly offered luxury travel, prostitutes and other bribes to Navy officers in exchange for confidential information.

Jose Luis Sanchez, 42, is the highest-ranking official to plead the guilty in the case, which rocked the Navy when the first charges were filed in 2013. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison when he is sentenced March 27.

Sanchez, who lives in San Diego and remains on active duty, was asked to silently read four passages of a 24-page plea agreement and say if the wrongdoing described was accurate.

"Yes, sir," he told U.S. Magistrate Judge David Bartick each time.

Robert Huie, an assistant U.S. attorney, told reporters that Sanchez admitted taking bribes of cash, prostitutes and hotel stays over four years.

Sanchez was charged with accepting bribes for steering Navy ships to Leonard Glenn Francis, chief executive of a Singapore-based company that provided services to vessels at ports.

Francis, known in military circles as "Fat Leonard," and his company Glenn Defense Marine Asia Ltd., or GDMA, serviced Navy ships for 25 years. Prosecutors say he bought information that allowed his company to overbill the Navy for port services in Asia by at least $20 million since 2009.

Francis was arrested in September 2013 and has pleaded not guilty.

Sanchez, one of four Navy members charged in the case, held key positions in Singapore and Japan before he was reassigned to Tampa, Fla., in 2013. Prosecutors alleged that he took $100,000 in cash, plane tickets and prostitution for information on Navy shipping schedules and other information, some of it classified.

The judge agreed to let Sanchez remove a GPS monitor while free on bond and allowed him to back the bond with assets of his mother and sister, instead of his own property.

Sanchez's attorney, Vincent Ward, said his client needed his own money to pay legal fees and assured the judge that Sanchez wouldn't betray his family by failing to appear for sentencing. His mother and sister sat in the front row.

"He's closer to his mom and sister than anyone," Ward said.

Sanchez and his attorney declined to speak with reporters as they left the courtroom.

He is the fifth person to plead guilty in the case and the second Navy official. Daniel Layug, a petty officer who admitted providing classified shipping schedules and other internal Navy information to Francis, pleaded guilty in May.

Navy Cmdr. Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz has pleaded not guilty.

Taxpayers take hit if Rams pull out

ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Taxpayers could take a hit if the Rams pull out and St. Louis is left without an NFL team.

Investigator Elliott Davis talked to Jim Shrewsbury the man appointed by Governor Nixon to head up the St. Louis Regional Sports Authority, the government agency that owns the Edward Jones Dome as well as Rams Park.

Shrewsbury says the City, State and County could end up forking over more dollars to help pay off the bonds if revenue from a loss of the Rams isn’t replace.

Right now the Rams pay $500,000 to use the Edward Jones Dome.

Right now the State pays $12 million a year, the City of St Louis $6 million, and St Louis County $6 Million to pay off the bonds sold to build and maintain the dome.

The bond pay off is over a 30 year period.

$129 million is still owed in bond payments that won’t be paid off till the year 2021.

The Rams also pay the Sports Authority $25,000 a year to rent Rams Park, the training facility in Earth City.

The Sports Authority would also have to make up that revenue if the Rams pulled out and we don’t get another team.

Shrewsbury says he’s confident they could eventually make up the losses saying they’d look for other tenants. But he admits that could take time.
