Two accused carjackers are facing murder charges in the death of a 17-year-old accomplice who was shot by police as he ran from the stolen car on the South Side, authorities said.
Akeem Clark, 22, of 7600 block of South Essex Avenue and Martel Odum, 23, of the 0-100 block of East 69th Street were each charged with murder along with robbery and vehicular hijacking.
They and Frederick Chatmen stole a gray Dodge Charger with Wisconsin plates that police later spotted heading west on 75th Street Monday afternoon, authorities said. When officers approached the Dodge when it stopped in traffic, Chatmen was in the driver's seat and appeared to reach for something next to him, officials said.
Chatmen then jumped out of the car and ran, according to police union spokesman Pat Camden. The officers chased Chatmen, who turned toward one of the officers with a black object in his hand that appeared to be pointed at him, Camden said.
"Believing the dark object to be a firearm and being in fear for (his) life, the officer fired at the offender," police said in a statement.
