Pedestrian fails to yield to an emergency vehicle responding to shots fired is struck

A Chicago police car responding to a shooting hit a 6-year-old girl in the Back of the Yards neighborhood early tonight, police said.

She was hit on the 5200 block of South Peoria Street after 5 p.m., Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Dan O'Brien said.

Police were responding to that block because someone reported seeing a car there that had been involved in an earlier shooting at 5400 S. Laflin Street, O'Brien said.

The girl was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital and listed in good condition, O'Brien said.

The man shot on Laflin, 30, is in fair condition at Holy Cross Hospital. Police said the shooting may have stemmed from an internal gang conflict.

He was shot in the arm and hand, though the wounds may be from a single through-and-through gunshot, police said.

Police didn't find the vehicle on Peoria but did recover a gun at that scene, O’Brien said.
