The Chicago Police Department’s Marine Unit is scheduled to resume its search this morning for a 14-year-old girl who went missing in Lake Michigan Thursday afternoon.
Chicago firefighters pulled another 14-year-old girl and a person who authorities haven’t identified from the water about 6 p.m. off Loyola Park on the far North Side. Those two reported the 14-year-old missing, authorities said.
The girl pulled from the water was taken to St. Francis Hospital in fair-to-serious condition, police and fire department officials said, but information on the other survivor wasn’t available. That person refused medical treatment at the scene.
“It was a warm day (Thursday) but this water is still 60 degrees. That’s cold water,” Chicago Fire Department Chief Ron Dornecker said at the scene. “On one side of the brakewall it’s pretty flat but on the otherside of the breakwall there’s some dangerous waves.”
The Chicago Police Department’s Marine Unit searched the surface until about 2 a.m. and is scheduled to resume diving about 8 a.m., Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.
