Pennsylvania man charged with attacking a police officer during protests against NATO on Sunday will remain in Cook County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.
Taylor Hall, 23, of Wilkinsburg, Pa., allegedly
grabbed a bicycle from a police officer, lifted it and forced it against the
officers body about 2 p.m. in the 1800 block of South Michigan
Avenue, according to prosecutors and police reports.
As Hall was being dragged away in handcuffs by police, he called out “mic check,” a phrased used by demonstrators to call the attention of the group, prosecutors said.
An attorney from the National Lawyers Guild who
appeared in court for his bond hearing Sunday afternoon argued that Hall was in
Chicago to document the NATO protests for an independent Pittsburgh
media outlet called Rustbelt.
“(His bond) basically sentences this guy to stay in custody until he can be tried,” said Sarah Gelsomino, who is also a spokesperson for the National Lawyers Guild. “He’s a journalist. He is not a threat to society.”
Hall faces a felony charge of aggravated battery against a peace officer and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. He is expected to appear in court again on May 25.
